13 June 2024 – HamiltonJet, the New Zealand-based world leader in high performance propulsion technology, and pioneers of electrification in the marine industry, continues to innovate with the launch of its new cutting edge fleet monitoring solution, Overwatch by HamiltonJet. Overwatch is a market-leading piece of technology designed to provide shore-side staff with detailed multi-vessel information in real-time that promises to revolutionize marine operations, deliver operational efficiencies and increase levels of safety for crew and passengers.
The platform has been four years in the making – two years development, working out how to harness the power of vessel digitisation, and another two years in pre-deployment testing on customer vessels. The result is a solution which provides insights from all vessel systems, streamlining operations for fleet managers who do not want a multitude of different systems in their business.
HamiltonJet Managing Director, Ben Reed says, “We are very proud of this new evolution in HamiltonJet’s offering. Our global network is by far the strongest in the waterjet industry, and our level of repeat custom and positive feedback on uptime and support is a testament to this. The advent of more on board electronics, wireless communications and cloud storage has created a significant opportunity for us to improve support and provide valuable data insights to our customers.”
Overwatch includes an on-board recording device (like an aeroplane black-box) which listens to the driveline control signals, whilst also recording any NMEA2000 signals and the AIS transponder enabling a full suite of data to be recorded, transmitted and analysed. This allows the use of the phone network, or existing on board internet connection, to send data to the cloud which, even with secure encryption in place, is fast enough to give a ‘near-live’ experience.
The benefits of Overwatch to users are numerous and include:
- Always-on vessel status. Able to be configured for a single vessel, or a fleet with multi-screen capability for fleet operations centres.
- Service data such as hours of operation, configurable alerts and historical alarms, allowing remote fault finding and proactive maintenance.
- Detailed historical data of all connected systems, including the activities of nearby vessels with AIS transponders. Perfect for operational analysis or incident investigation.
- Comparative route analysis, allowing detailed comparison of similar periods of operation (e.g ferry routes at different times of the day or with different skippers).
Luke Cook, HamiltonJet’s Global Aftersales Manager believes the platform is market leading. He says, “the marine industry is evolving and the use of data for decision making is increasing. Platforms such as Overwatch take data that would be historically available exclusively to those on board the vessel and democratizes it. The ability to use any device to see in real time where your vessels are operating, their current conditions and equipment performance is a major shift in industry expectations.”
The Overwatch platform is an integral part of HamiltonJet’s strategic growth plan. The organisation is investing significantly in the deployment of resources to develop three core, future-thinking, strategic pillars for the business – Electrification, Digitisation and Autonomy. The Overwatch platform supports the digitisation pillar, and will be a fundamental supporting mechanism for Hybrid, Electric and Autonomy platforms.
Reed says, “HamiltonJet has a strong focus on being at the forefront of technology in the marine industry. As a manufacturer of advanced marine propulsion solutions, we have always innovated to push the boundaries of technology, whether it being hydrodynamic performance, through to electronic control systems and advanced vessel dynamic control systems such as JETanchor. We believe that technology is the core to growth.”
The Overwatch Platform can be accessed via overwatch.hamiltonjet.com. Interested operators will require a vessel survey to be completed which can be arranged via HamiltonJet at https://overwatch.hamiltonjet.com/contact. Operators then subscribe to the platform and HamiltonJet will provide the hardware and configuration to maximise the effectiveness of the platform. Once the platform is set up on board it is accessed through the Overwatch web and app portals found at ow.hamiltonjet.com and the Apple Store for iPad and iPhone. Android Apps will also be available soon after launch.
