Shared-use boating service Skipperi has won the 2023 Eke Panuku Marina’s Sustainable Action of the Year Award.
The Eke Panuku ‘Best Sustainable Action of the Year’ award recognises boaties and businesses that are leading by example to protect New Zealand coastlines.
Eke Panuku Development Auckland is a council-controlled organisation that delivers urban regeneration in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.
Examples for businesses or organisations to enter could be beach litter collection, hybrid conversions to save fuel, electric boats, taking a lead on responsible waste separation or at sea discharging.
Skipperi became part of the Westhaven community at Z pier in June 2021, offering a subscription-based boat-sharing service that started with just one boat. Since then the fleet of Haines Hunter SF545s has grown to 25 vessels and Aucklanders have done more than 15,000 hours of boating!
The Eke Panuku judges stated that “Their service not only makes boating more affordable through cost-sharing between users, but also reduces environmental impacts with fewer boats being used by more users – the manufacture and fit out of just one boat satisfies the boating usage of multiple subscribers.”
The judges were also impressed with Skipperi’s approach to environmental care, subscriber education, and resource efficiency.
Skipperi Managing Director Alex Rosenthal says he is thrilled that Skipperi is has been recognised by Eke Panuku.
“We are honoured to receive this award from Eke Panuku. Our team is passionate about making boating accessible while also prioritising sustainability and minimising the environmental impact,” said Rosenthal.
